Supervisors, Elected, Appointed and Associate

The New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District is a local unit of Government governed by a five member Board of Supervisors. Three of these members are elected and two are appointed by the North Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Commission by recommendation of the local elected body. The current list of Supervisors and staff can be found on our Soil and Water Conservation Staff Directory page. All seats on the Board are currently filled; however, we are actively looking for Associate Supervisors. More information can be found in the documents posted.

Internships

Internships are arrangements in which students and career-changers lend their talents to organizations in return for an opportunity to develop skills, learn about an industry, and gain exposure to the work environment. They allow a person to explore career avenues and the specific organization or company as well. Internship programs can be set up as either compensated or non-compensated. You might earn a stipend, a wage or simply college credit and work experience. Whether paid or unpaid, an internship is often quite beneficial to the student who participates, for they receive "real world" experience and an early opportunity to impress potential employers. Employers also benefit from internship programs by obtaining the services of skilled personnel for modest cost and by being exposed to new ideas and perspectives. They too get to test out potential employees before making an offer.

Volunteer

Storm Drain Marking

Storm drain marking involves labeling storm drain inlets with plaques, tiles, and painted or pre-cast messages warning citizens not to dump pollutants into the drain. The messages are generally simple phrases or graphics to remind those passing by that the storm drains connect to local water bodies and that dumping will pollute those waters. Some storm drains markers specify which water body the inlet drains to or name the particular river, lake, or bay. Common messages include: "No Dumping. Drains to Water Source," "Drains to River," and "You Dump It, You Drink It. No Waste Here." In addition, storm drain markers often have pictures to convey the message, including common aquatic fauna or a graphic depiction of the path from drain to water body. Here in New Hanover County, we are working with the City of Wilmington Stormwater Services to mark drains within City limits that drain to the Cape Fear River. As budgets allow, we will expand these marking efforts to the beach communities and unincorporated areas throughout the county. Tree Fest

TreeFest, an annual distribution of tree seedlings hosted by Keep New Hanover County Beautiful (an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful), is typically held over two days at the end of every January in Independence Mall at the JC Penney end court. Local residents are invited to select up to five tree seedlings to take home and plant on their property. A suggested donation of $3 per household will help ensure that TreeFest will return in years to come. TreeFest is funded by the donations received from participants during the event. hours on both days are typical 10 am to 5 pm (or until the trees run out).

Earth Day

Wilmington's Earth Day Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting our planet through environmental education and awareness. This is a small group of volunteers who give their time to make the organization and the annual celebration a success.

There are a lot of different volunteer opportunities with Wilmington's annual Earth Day Celebration. Whether you're available during the celebration itself - or a different day of the year - there's something for everyone. When was the last time you volunteered? The rewards are endless. Giving just a few hours of your time really does make a difference. Volunteering gives us all a sense of community involvement and can help us build incredible, life-long relationships.

Pet Events

According to the City of Wilmington Stormwater Services, fecal coliform bacteria is the largest manageable pollutant in New Hanover County waterways. In an effort to raise awareness in the community, we attend pet events to interact with pets and their owners. We encourage responsible pet ownership and stewardship of the environment by having people sign pledges to clean up after their pets. The Program is called Canines for Clean Water and is a program that we offer in collaboration with the City of Wilmington's Stormwater Services.
