NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – At its final regular meeting for 2023, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Bill Rivenbark to continue serving as Chair, while Commissioner Leann Pierce will also continue as Vice-Chair. They will serve in these respective roles until December 2, 2024.
“I’m humbled to be selected by my peer Commissioners to continue serving as Chair,” Rivenbark said. “Over the last year, this Board has worked together and accomplished so much, including support for workforce housing, the approval of our finance model for Project Grace and a newly adopted five-year strategic plan that will guide our county moving forward. I’m excited to continue this work with my fellow Commissioners and about what we can achieve collectively in 2024.”
Rivenbark was elected to serve a four-year term from December 2020 until December 2024, while Pierce was elected to a four-year term from December 2022 through December 2026.
Every December, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners elects its Chair and Vice-Chair to serve a term of one year. The Chair presides over all meetings of the board, while the Vice-Chair acts in the absence of the Chair. The Board of Commissioners is the legislative and governing body of New Hanover County and consists of five members, elected at-large, who serve four-year staggered terms.
“While each Commissioner comes to the Board with different lived experiences, we all have a singular focus– to be stewards of our community’s resources and serve the citizens of New Hanover County,” Pierce said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue as Vice-Chair and look forward to working with my fellow Commissioners to provide the leadership our community has come to expect from its county government.”
Regular meetings are typically held on the first and third Mondays of each month at the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse (24 North 3rd Street, Room 301). A meeting schedule, agendas, minutes and previous meeting videos can be viewed online. Meetings can also be watched live on NHCtv.com, Spectrum channel 13, and the county’s YouTube channel.
