How can I find out if my property is located in a floodplain?: You can access the county’s flood maps on the GIS mapping website on the “Where does it Flood” tab. Floodplain information can also be found on the Flood Risk Information System website, or by contacting a member of New Hanover County’s Planning and Land Use staff.

1. Can I build in a floodway?: A structure may be built in a floodway only if it can be demonstrated through an engineering analysis, commonly referred to as a “No-Rise” study, that the development will not result in any increase in the flood levels during the occurrence of the base flood. A floodway is defined as the channel of a river, or other watercourse, and the adjacent land areas that must be reserved in order to discharge the base flood without cumulatively increasing the water surface elevation more than one foot.
