NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The Cape Fear Latino Festival will be held at the New Hanover County Arboretum on Sunday, September 18 as an opportunity for residents to learn about and engage with the local Latino community. The event, which is free to the public, will run from noon through 7 p.m.
Established two years ago by Friends of the Arboretum as the Hispanic Heritage Festival, the event has continued to grow and is now being coordinated by the Cape Fear Latinos as an event featuring music, food and cultural experiences.
“We are excited for the opportunity to show the diversity of the Latinx community in New Hanover County, as well as showcase local talent,” said Cape Fear Latino’s Co-President Jazmin Treyjo. “We are thankful to the Arboretum to give us the space and to both the Arboretum and New Hanover County Office of Diversity and Equity for their support and trust.”
Latin American countries like Puerto Rico, Columbia, Guatemala, Mexico and others will be highlighted as part of this event, with several local Latin food vendors on site, along with live music, local artists, a children’s parade and more.
Performances will include traditional dance routines from Columbia, Mexico and El Salvador. The festival will also feature the first Latino Pageant in New Hanover County and the Cape Fear Latino Festival Queen will be crowned.
Additionally, the Cape Fear Latino Festival is partnering with New Hanover County Health and Human Services to provide attendees with the latest information about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and monkeypox outbreak. Local nonprofits, various for-profit organizations and other businesses will be offering information in both English and Spanish about different resources or opportunities they provide, as well as items for sale.
Parking at the NHC Arboretum (6206 Oleander Dr) is limited so a free shuttle will run from Bradley Creek Elementary School (6211 Greenville Loop Rd) from 12:30-7:30 p.m.
