Grants for Gardens and More

By the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers (EMGVA)

2021 EMGVA Grants are available to any local non-profit organization willing to propose a gardening project that will focus on Research, Teaching /Learning, Diversity of Communities served, Sustainability of the project and Stewardship of our natural resources.  Grants typically range from $300 to $3,000 and last for one year.  Those interested may obtain a grant application from the NHC Arboretum Administration Office at 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, or call 910-798-7660. All completed EMGVA grant applications must be submitted to the Arboretum administration office either by mail or in person by May 15, 2021. An electronic copy must also be sent to emgvagrants@gmail.com. Funded EMGVA grants will be announced by September 30, 2021.

The EMGVA has offered grants since 2008. Initially, the EMGVA supported various areas of the Arboretum to include NHC 4-H, the Ability Garden for individuals with disabilities, and other special learning gardens and projects within the Arboretum.  In 2015, the EMGVA decided to open the grant application process to any school, library or local non-profit organization in New Hanover County.  A few examples of previous grant winners are: LINC John E. Craig Urban Farm – Creating Raised Beds, NHC Extension Pollinator Garden, Wrightsville Beach Elementary Rain Water Garden.

Thanks to the annual EMGVA plant sale, held every spring (except during COVID) at the Arboretum, the annual amount available for grants has doubled to $20,000 in 2020.

Come see some of the previous grant projects at the Arboretum.

The Arboretum is free to all and open every day from 8am-5pm.
