NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Cooperative Extension has partnered with Wilmington Farmers Market to bring additional benefits to residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as EBT.
SNAP recipients can now use their benefits at the Wilmington Farmers Market at Tidal Creek, in conjunction with Fresh Bucks dollars that will match dollar for dollar up to $20 for purchases made toward fruits and vegetables. This producer-only market is held weekly on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and offers diverse products to include local produce, microgreens, eggs, herbs, flowers, shell fish, and farm raised meats.
“Accepting SNAP at the Wilmington Farmers Market at Tidal Creek helps to increase access to local foods for those with limited resources,” said Breyana Davis, SNAP-Ed Steps to Health Nutrition Educator for Cooperative Extension in New Hanover and Pender counties. “Now a customer can use $20 in SNAP benefits at the farmer’s market, and receive an additional $20 through the Fresh Bucks program. This will create a more accessible local food system and educate consumers on the importance of buying local food.”
SNAP recipients will be able to visit the market on any Saturday, check-in at the information booth and receive SNAP tokens to purchase any SNAP-eligible food item. Fresh Bucks tokens, up to $20, will also be given for fruit and vegetable purchases.
