NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – The “BeFriend a Tree” Sale fundraiser will be held Friday, September 10 through Sunday, October 10, allowing the public to purchase native trees online. The fundraiser is hosted by the Friends of the Arboretum, with proceeds supporting maintenance and updates to the gardens and its North Carolina Extension programming.

All trees offered have been hand-selected by landscape professionals. Before selecting trees, residents are encouraged to consider the size of the site, whether utility lines exist above and below ground, proximity to buildings and site conditions like soil type, drainage and sun exposure.

Tree species include Twombley’s Red Sentinel Japanese Maple for tight spaces, the espaliered Sasanqua Camellia ‘Kanjiro’, Spirited Hinoki Cypress, Judy Zuk Tulip Magnolia and the new Flamethrower Redbud developed by NC State. Natives, espaliers and topiaries, four- season interest, flowering and/or fruiting plants and trees will range from 3-15 gallons in size.

Trees must be purchased online at and can be scheduled for delivery or pickup at the Arboretum.

Deliveries must be within a 40-mile radius of Wilmington and will be scheduled for October 15-17. The delivery fee for the general public is $35, or free for Friends of the Arboretum members.

The public may choose to pick-up orders at the Arboretum, located at 6206 Oleander Drive, on the following days:
